The trend of atypical masala entertainers began all over again with WANTED, which was effectively emulated by the super-successful DABANGG. The larger-than-life hero knocks down 50 thugs and sends them flying in the air with just one punch. He romances the heroine. Puts his life at stake by catching the bull by the horns. Emerges victorious in the finale... Come to think of it, the Indian audience is starved for true-blue masala entertainers that were admired and revered in the 1970s and 1980s. Oh, can we ever forget the serpentine queues outside cinema halls to watch those movies, starring our fav stars? With SINGHAM, the Ajay Devgn - Rohit Shetty team goes back to their roots; both started with action films, if you recall -- PHOOL AUR KAANTE and ZAMEEN, respectively. SINGHAM is one of those earthy, traditional, uncomplicated masala movies that most of us grew up on. The protagonist of SINGHAM is not the desi version of James Bond, nor is he any kind of a superhero.

SINGHAM pays homage to the action films of 1970s, which was known for the heroism, death-defying action sequences and pulse pounding thrills. It's an acknowledgement to one of the most successful genres of Bollywood -- action movies -- known for the trademark good versus evil themes and well choreographed stunts. Unlike many films recently, SINGHAM revives memories of the bygone era that stressed on raw action and was rich in fist-to-fist combat scenes. In fact, it has traces of action that Ajay's father [Veeru Devgn] and Rohit's father [Shetty] immortalized in their movies. But SINGHAM is a film of today, hence the stunts are extremely stylized and polished in keeping with the times. It's raw power presented in a slick demeanor.

Story

Story: ‘Singham’ is the story of Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn), who is an honest, diligent cop and has his own principles. He believes in fighting against injustice and in the due course lands up taking up a fight against a powerful criminal-cum- politician Jaykant Shikre (Prakash Raj). Thus, Shikre is all determined to make Singham’s life hell. In this whole course of action, enters Singham's girlfriend Kavya (Kajal Aggarwal). Thanks to his rivalry with Jaykant, Bajirao gets transferred to Goa, where he meets Rakesh Kadam's widow Sonali Kulkarni. Kadam was an honest police inspector, who committed suicide. It's Kadam's family, which makes Bajirao have a realisation that the system needs to be changed. Eventually, in a very tactful way, he plans to gather all proof against Jaykant and fights against him without breaking the law.

Story treatment: Right from the beginning, 'Singham' will make you draw parallels to the last super hit cop flick ‘Dabangg’. Be it Ajay’s shirtless look or the title track, one can gauge a lot of similarity between the two. This is a remake of a Tamil film by the same name and with all its power packed action sequences, the audience can truly get a southern treat, with not a moment for boredom. 'Singham' does bring back the genre of action flicks to Bollywood. ‘Singham’ means 'Lion' and Ajay, who plays the central character, roars like a true lion. Prakash Raj, who plays the villain is at par with Ajay and proves to be a very strong character even in front of an actor of Ajay's calibre. With all the high voltage drama, this one's surely going to work with the masses.

Star Cast: Ajay, who plays the top-cop, has enacted the role in a very strong and determined way. Though in the first part, there is not many dialogues by him, but he still proves the fact that he's one the top action heros of the industry. Southern siren Kajal Aggarwal, who is seen opposite Ajay, is overshadowed by his presence. Though she looks promising, but the duo's chemistry lacks any spark. While on the other hand, Sonali Kulkarni as a widow fits the role perfectly. Prakash Raj, who is a big name in the South, looks powerful on screen. Sudhanshu Pandey's cameo makes an impact, whereas Sachin Khedekar proves that he's got a bad comic timing. He is a complete misfit.

Direction: With cars flying high, unique fight sequences, this is out an out a Rohit Shetty movie. Rohit has once again proved that he is a master, both at delivering an action as well as comedy flick. Rohit and Ajay have always come out as a hit pair and this one's yet another example. Mind blowing action pieces have been designed all by Rohit Shetty himself. As mentioned above, there's a little bit of 'Dabangg' in 'Singham,' but Rohit still manages to create a different identity for the film. Rohit is seen drawing inspiration from his legendary father Shetty, though the actions sequences featured in the flick are much more stylised.

Dialogues / Cinematography / Music: The movie sees a lot of use of Marathi in its dialogues. Written by Farhad-Sajid's, they lack intense punch that could have taken the flick to just another level. The music has been composed by noted composers from Marathi films- Ajay Gogavale and Atul Gogavale, but they fail to meet the expectations of the audience. The title track is much like the title track from ‘Dabangg’ (Hudd Hudd Dabangg). The music will not linger in your mind. Dudley's cinematography is worth a watch.

3 Ups and 3 Downs: This remake has been handled very carefully. Rohit and Ajay’s magic is something to watch out for. It’s one of Rohit’s best works. The action scenes are very well shot and the film is completely for the masses. But if you're looking forward to some good romantic moments between Ajay Devgn and Kajal, you'll be disappointed, as they don’t click together. The action takes over the romance in the film. Go for it, if you want to catch one hell of an action flick!

On the whole, SINGHAM is a full-on masala film that works big time for varied reasons: The energetic drama, the terrific confrontations, the raw stunts and of course, for the three 'heroes' -- Ajay Devgn, Prakash Raj and director Rohit Shetty. It's a complete package of entertainment for the masses and devoted fans of masala movies. This one is sure to roar at the box-office. It has Blockbuster written all over it!
